Freddie Awards

The Project

The Freddie Awards honor the best in member rewards programs from the hotel and airline industry. Broken down by region, voters around the world rate the best frequent flyer and frequent guest programs across several categories. Since 2012, Solertium has developed and maintained the Freddie Awards voting platform, one of the first sites to go fully mobile and responsive at scale in 2013.

The Work

The Freddies voting application needs to be available around the clock for the entire balloting period. Traffic arrives in huge waves as each hospitality program enlists its membership's support. Freddie Awards has run on Google App Engine since 2012, and continues to take advantage of advances on the Google Cloud Platform for high reliability and scalability.
The ballots are translated into five languages, managed in Google Doc Spreadsheets. Initially, we used Google Web Toolkit's ability to produce multiple permutations and isolate the translations behind code splits, to keep the initial download size small, and enable translation on the fly. Later, we migrated this to a bespoke application custom written in Flask specifically for the App Engine platform. Google Analytics Events provides realtime monitoring of the balloting process, and Solve Media protects against automated scripting while reinforcing sponsor brand messages.
