The Project
The
IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ assesses the conservation status of over 60,000 plant and animal species, establishing the most widely recognized global publication on the subject. Solertium has provided technical development services for
IUCN and the Red List since 2009, helping one of the first large Rails-based sites keep pace with technology and handle ever-increasing demand. We work closely with the Red List Unit and the global community of Red List users to make sure that the site stays available and accurate through its frequent updates and revisions.
The Work
Since taking on responsibility for the Red List, the Solertium team has transitioned the site from bespoke hosting to the Amazon cloud, backed it with content management, adapted its data management to changing backends, and developed new APIs to power partner sites, subsites and initiatives. The main site is currently driven by
Ruby on Rails, with
Node.js used for API services.
